Santorini Wineries

Santorini is well known in Greece for the quality wines produced here.Big wineries like Boutaris have a large share of the market but also the small ones make a differense like Argyros Estate.

Here is some info about the wineries.
Canava Argiros
Argiros Estate has been producing wine on the island since 1903, and is now run by the third generation of the Argiros family, Matheos Argyros along with his father, Yiannis. When Yiannis took over the winery in 1974 it was primarily a bulk operation, selling wine to whomever would buy the cheap grapes. The early Seventies were a hard time for winery owners on the island, many of whom were seeing that their land was worth more to real estate developers than as productive vineyards, given the burgeoning tourism industry. Rather than selling, however, Yiannis took the opportunity to purchase the best vineyard parcels on the island, and quietly assembled what is now the 55 acre family estate. During this time he also made radical changes to the wine production regimen, reducing yields, modernizing the winemaking technology, and focusing on quality rather than quantity.

The winery now produces some of the best wine on the tiny island, and is known especially for its Vin Santo, which is aged for 14 years (the current release is 1984), and is topped up, solera-style with a little wine from new vintages every year. According to some, this is Greece's most sought-after dessert wine.

Santorini Museums

Santorini has a long story to tell.A lot of museums are all over the island. Here are a few of them.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera houses finds from the excavations at Akrtotiri, conducted under the auspices of the Archaeological Society at Athens, the earlier excavations at Potamos, made by members of the German Archaeological Institute at Athens, and rescue excavations at various other sites on the island, carried out by the 21st Ephorate of Antiquities for the Cyclades and Samos, as well as objects discovered fortuitously or handed over.

The exhibition is structured in four units, referring to the history of research at Thera, the geology of Thera, the island's history from the Late Neolithic to the Late Cycladic I periond (early 17th century B.C.) and the heyday of the city at Akrotiri (mature Late Cycladic I period, 17th century B.C.). In the last unit, in particular, various aspects are presented, such as the plan and architecture of the city and its organization as an urban centre, the emergent bureaucratic system, the development of the monumental art of wall-painting, the rich and diverse pottery repertoire, the elegant jewellery, the reciprocal influences between vase-painting and wall-painting, and the city's and the island's complex network of contacts with the outside word.

Santorini Locations Oia or Ia

Oia or Ia is situated on the north of the island, 11 km away from Fira.
The most beautiful village of Santorini no matter what.Millions of visitors come every year just to watch the unique sunset(they even clap their hands when the sun is gone)...
The village before the big earthquake on 1956 had a few industrial facilities where the locals worked. The population was much higher all year long compared to nowadays. But the damages where too big and the owners did not repair the facilities and left the island. That was a time when Santorini was not discovered yet as a cosmopolitan island and a Must.
Today the top hotels are placed here and many celebrities and very wealthy people stay in Oia for their holidays.
